Free Spins in New Zealand: What They Are Worth and How the Terms Work

Free spins are the most common casino offer in New Zealand and the least understood. This page explains the difference between no deposit free spins, deposit free spins and no wagering free spins, how spin value and eligible pokies affect what an offer pays, and the win caps and wagering that apply to spin winnings. See no deposit bonuses for spins with no deposit, no wagering bonuses for spins where you keep what you win, and online pokies for the games they run on.

A free spin is a round on a pokie where the operator covers the stake. It is the most common promotional format in online gambling, and the one whose headline number is furthest from what a player actually receives.

Fifty free spins is not fifty dollars. It is usually closer to ten, and what comes back from it is usually not cash.

This page explains the arithmetic, the four formats, and the terms that determine value. It does not list offers.

What a spin package is actually worth

The number of spins is the headline. The spin value — the stake covered per round — is the figure that determines the size of the offer, and it sits in the terms rather than the advertisement.

Before you use them

Seven terms that decide what a free spin offer is worth

1. Spin value
The stake covered per round. Multiply it by the number of spins to get the real size of the offer. A hundred spins at NZ$0.10 is NZ$10 — smaller than fifty spins at NZ$0.40.
2. Whether winnings are cash or credit
The single most important term. Cash is withdrawable. Credit carries a wagering obligation before any of it can leave the account.
3. Wagering multiplier
Applied to the winnings, not to the spin value. Multipliers on free spin winnings are frequently higher than on deposit bonuses — 35x and above is common.
4. Maximum win
A ceiling on what can be withdrawn from the offer regardless of what the spins produced. Anything above it is removed.
5. Expiry
Spins commonly expire within a day or two, and any wagering requirement has its own separate deadline. A short window against a high multiplier can make an offer effectively impossible to clear.
6. Eligible games
Spins are restricted to nominated pokies, and the game selection is chosen by the operator rather than the player. Wagering may also only count on a limited set of games.
7. Maximum bet during playthrough
Once you are clearing a wagering requirement, a stake cap usually applies — often around NZ$5. Exceeding it, even once, can void the bonus and any winnings under the offer terms.
Under the Online Casino Gambling Regulations 2026, licensed operators must present bonus terms in clear, plain language, and the value of any bonus or inducement is capped at NZ$100, or 200% of the deposit or bet, whichever is lower.

Two consequences follow, and neither is obvious from an advertised offer.

A hundred spins can be a smaller offer than fifty. One hundred spins at NZ$0.10 is NZ$10 of covered stakes. Fifty spins at NZ$0.40 is NZ$20. The larger number is the smaller offer.

The spin value is usually below a normal bet. If you typically stake NZ$1 per spin, a NZ$0.20 free spin is a fifth of your usual round. This is why free spins often feel underwhelming to play — they are being played at a stake the player did not choose.

The distinction that matters most is in the third column. In three of the four formats, winnings arrive as bonus credit carrying a wagering requirement. Only no-wagering spins produce cash on arrival.

That distinction is frequently collapsed in how these offers are described. “Win real money from your free spins” is technically accurate — the winnings are real and denominated in dollars — while omitting that the money cannot leave the account until a betting obligation is met, and that most balances are exhausted before it is.

Wagering multipliers on free spin winnings also tend to be higher than on deposit bonuses. Where a deposit match might carry 20x or 30x, free spin winnings commonly carry 35x or more.

The terms to check

The maths

House edge across common live dealer games

The house edge is the operator’s built-in mathematical advantage, expressed as a percentage of each bet. It is the reason continual gambling over time results in losses for the player, regardless of individual sessions.

GameChance or skillTypical house edgeAverage loss per NZ$100 staked
BlackjackPartial skillAround 0.5–1%, played to basic strategyNZ$0.50–$1.00
Baccarat (banker bet)Pure chanceAround 1.06%About NZ$1.06
European roulette (single zero)Pure chanceAround 2.7%About NZ$2.70
American roulette (double zero)Pure chanceAround 5.26%About NZ$5.26
Money wheel and game show formatsPure chanceVaries widely, often well above rouletteCheck the game’s stated return
Two things this table does not mean. A low house edge is not a low risk — it describes an average across a very large number of bets, not any individual session. And the figures depend on the specific rules and bet types in use, which vary between tables. Side bets, in particular, usually carry a far higher edge than the main game.

One of those deserves emphasis because it produces the worst outcomes for the least visible reason.

The maximum bet rule applies once you are clearing a wagering requirement. A stake cap of around NZ$5 is common. Exceeding it — even once, even by accident, even because an in-game feature multiplied the total stake without changing the visible base bet — can void the bonus and any winnings attached to it. Breaches usually surface at withdrawal, when the play history is reviewed.

Our welcome bonuses page covers that mechanism in more detail, and our casino bonuses hub works through wagering calculations generally.

What the new regulations change

New Zealand’s Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 came into force on 1 May 2026, with supporting regulations effective from 3 July 2026.

Free spins are an inducement in the language of the regulations and are treated the same as any other bonus. Three consequences follow for licensed operators.

A value cap. A bonus or inducement cannot exceed NZ$100, or 200% of the deposit or bet, whichever is lower. Packages advertised in the hundreds of spins will need to sit within that ceiling once valued.

Restricted promotion. Bonuses and inducements may only be offered on the operator’s own platform or through direct marketing to an existing customer. They cannot be promoted on third-party websites, and affiliate marketing and paid endorsements are prohibited.

Plain-language terms. Operators must present bonus terms clearly. Spin value, wagering multiplier and win caps are precisely the terms that requirement is aimed at.

Alongside this, autoplay is prohibited for licensed operators — every round requires a deliberate action. Our New Zealand gambling laws guide sets out the full timeline.

What “free” does and does not mean

No-deposit spins involve no payment. That is genuinely true, and it is the basis on which they are often described as risk-free.

The description does not hold up, for three reasons.

They require a full account. Registration, identity verification and age verification are all mandatory — age verification is required under the new regime with a minimum age of 18. A funded, verified gambling account is the actual product being distributed.

They are a first step, not a standalone event. The commercial function of a no-deposit offer is acquisition. It exists to establish an account and a habit, not to give money away.

Winnings are usually locked. Bonus credit with a 35x requirement is not a windfall you can walk away with. Withdrawing it requires continued play, which requires continued exposure.

None of that makes free spins a scam. It does mean the phrase “no strings attached” cannot honestly sit on the same page as a table of attached conditions.

Practical points

Bonuses are optional. Most operators let you decline a spin package and deposit without it. A deposit with no bonus carries no wagering requirement, no maximum bet cap and no withdrawal restriction.

Check the game before you spin. The eligible games are chosen by the operator. Their volatility varies widely, and a high-volatility game will return nothing across fifty spins far more often than a low-volatility one.

Set a deposit limit first. Licensed operators must offer limits on deposits, spending and session duration in daily, weekly or monthly increments. Our responsible gaming page covers the full set of tools.

Loss-triggered spins are a rebate. Where spins arrive after a losing period, they function as cashback and only appear when you are already behind. Our cashback bonuses page covers what the research says about that structure.

About this page

What it is, what it is not, and what to check before you act on it.

Information, not advice
This page is published for information. It is not financial, legal or gambling advice, and nothing on it is a recommendation to gamble. Gambling costs money over time by design; no strategy, system or bonus changes that.
Check it yourself before you act
Licensing, ownership, bonus terms, withdrawal limits and country availability all change, sometimes within weeks. Anything stated here was accurate when the page was last reviewed. Confirm the current position on the regulator’s own register and in the operator’s own terms before you deposit.
Corrections
Claims on this site are checked against primary sources — regulator registers, legislation and operator terms — and the sources used are listed below. Where we get something wrong, the page is corrected rather than defended.
Play safe
You must be of legal gambling age to play. Set a deposit limit before your first deposit, not after a losing session — and never gamble money you need for something else.

The bonus trap

Why bonuses and live tables do not mix

Wagering requirements are met at different rates depending on the game. Pokies usually count in full. Live dealer and table games typically count at 10–20% — or not at all. That percentage is a multiplier on the work required.

Game playedCounts toward wagering atBets needed to clear 30x on NZ$50
Pokies100%NZ$1,500
Live dealer table20%NZ$7,500
Live dealer table10%NZ$15,000
Live dealer tableExcludedNever clears
At 10% weighting, a 30x requirement is effectively a 300x requirement. The advertised multiplier stays the same; the turnover needed rises tenfold. A NZ$50 bonus that looks like NZ$1,500 of betting becomes NZ$15,000.
Some offers exclude live games from wagering entirely, meaning play at the tables contributes nothing at all while the bonus balance is still active. In a small number of cases, playing an excluded game voids the bonus outright.
The practical conclusion: if live tables are what you want to play, a bonus is usually the wrong thing to accept. Depositing without one leaves no wagering requirement, no game weighting, and no maximum bet restriction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is 50 free spins actually worth?

It depends entirely on the spin value in the terms. At NZ$0.20 per spin, fifty spins covers NZ$10 of stakes. The number of spins alone tells you nothing — a hundred spins at NZ$0.10 is a smaller offer than fifty at NZ$0.40.

Do I keep what I win from free spins?

Only if the offer says no wagering. In every other format, winnings arrive as bonus credit carrying a wagering requirement — commonly 35x or higher — that must be met before anything can be withdrawn.

Are no-deposit free spins risk-free?

No money is staked, which is what the phrase usually means. But they require a fully verified gambling account, they exist to acquire customers rather than to give money away, and any winnings are typically locked behind a wagering requirement. “No strings attached” is not an accurate description.

Why do free spin winnings have higher wagering than deposit bonuses?

Because no deposit was made to offset the operator’s cost. Multipliers of 35x and above are common on free spin winnings, against 20x to 30x on many deposit matches.

Can free spin winnings be capped?

Yes. A maximum win limit is standard on no-deposit spins, often around NZ$100. Anything above the cap is removed regardless of what the spins produced.

Will free spin offers change under the new New Zealand rules?

Yes. Free spins are inducements under the Online Casino Gambling Regulations 2026, subject to the NZ$100 or 200% cap, restricted to the operator’s own platform or direct marketing, and required to carry plain-language terms.
